Outside of work
I love creating a community where people can tell stories together and I love the challenge of getting 200 volunteers to put something on stage in a very short space of time.
Community theatre is a place where people come together to develop and tell a story to a room full of strangers. I love both the community aspect and the challenge of bringing it to life: a fixed, immovable opening night, a couple of hundred volunteers with day jobs, a limited budget and a product that people pay to see.
OSMaD is a completely volunteer-run community music theatre company that has been staging musicals in Melbourne for decades. I've been involved since 2016, on the committee since 2019, and held the Treasurer and President portfolios across that time.
| Role | Years |
|---|---|
| President | 2023 – 2025 |
| Treasurer | 2020, 2022 – 2023 |
| Production Manager | 2019 – 2022 |
| Committee Member | 2019 – present |
As President I invested volunteer experience to try and manage the decline in volunteerism and the growing demands on the company required to deliver a show of OSMaD size, overseeing annual volunteer numbers grew from 70 to 200.
As Treasurer I held the full financial governance portfolio for a roughly $150k budget. I delivered financial statements, budgeting, AGM reporting, managed bank authorities and insurance for an incorporated association with no external auditor. I also had to come up with strategies to support growing volunteerism, costs and manage risk without a growing income stream.
It's a smaller stage than a hospital network or a listed company, but the underlying problem is identical to the one I solve professionally: sustaining an organisation through declining volunteerism using process, technology, delegation and culture. Getting a group of people — most of them volunteers, all of them busy — pointed in the same direction, with enough structure that things don't fall over and enough trust that they don't have to be told twice.
You can read more about my committee work on the OSMaD committee page.
Seasons I've contributed to since joining OSMaD, on stage, backstage or on the committee. The full company history is on the OSMaD past shows page.
